Copley Hospital Laboratory has achieved continued accreditation from the College of American Pathologists (CAP) following an on-site inspection. The award is one of prestige, as it recognizes excellence in the services being provided. Copley is one of more than 8,000 CAP-Accredited facilities worldwide. “As Copley’s Laboratory Medical Director, I am very fortunate to work with an outstanding staff, in a CAP accredited lab. The CAP program for laboratory accreditation is a vigorous process with requirements that go above and beyond that of other hospital accreditation organizations,” states Armando Ciampa, M.D.
The US Federal government recognizes the CAP Laboratory Accreditation Program, begun in the early 1960’s, as being equal to or more stringent than the government’s own inspection program.
Copley’s Director of Laboratory Services, Amy Shopland, explains that the inspection is designed to ensure all laboratory patients are receiving the highest standard of care. “The inspectors review records and the quality control of procedures for the preceding two years, as well as staff qualifications, skill of the technician, and knowledge of the interpreting physicians, equipment, facilities, safety programs and records, types of methods of quality control, and the overall management of the laboratory.” Inspectors look at more than 4,000 items during their inspection.
“Participation in the CAP accreditation program speaks to the commitment of Copley’s Laboratory and its staff. These efforts require significant teamwork, and the staff has always stepped up to the plate and performed exceptionally, as our CAP accreditation testifies. I am very proud of everyone for a job well done,” continued Dr. Ciampa.
Services available at Copley’s Laboratory include blood bank, chemistry, hematology, immunology, microbiology, and pathology. “We have an excellent group of dedicated employees – from the phlebotomists, who interact with the patients to draw blood, to the laboratory medical technicians, who perform a multitude of diagnostic tests,” said Shopland. “The services they provide are vital to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease.” Last year the Lab provided 328,599 tests.
