MORRISVILLE, VT – With the recent closure of the Copley Birthing Center, Copley Hospital has worked carefully to ensure that valuable equipment and supplies continue to benefit maternal and newborn care in the community. To support the next chapter in local maternity care, Copley donated equipment, furniture, and other supplies to the Green Mountain Birth Center (GMBC), which is preparing to open its doors to serve families in the region.
Copley’s Chief Nursing Officer, Sam Allaire, RN, and the hospital team diligently reviewed equipment and supplies following the hospital’s Birthing Center transition. Items that could be reallocated within Copley Hospital were distributed to departments including, The Women’s Center, Med Surg, Emergency, and Peri-Op. Other hospitals, including Gifford, Adirondack Health, and Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital, purchased equipment. Some items
were sent to support healthcare initiatives in Uganda.
“We wanted to ensure that resources from the Birthing Center continued to support families and providers here at home and beyond,” Allaire said.
Mary Lou Kopas, APRN/CNM, one of the founders of Green Mountain Birth Center, received the donation to help launch their program. The donation includes essential equipment and supplies to support safe, high-quality care for expecting families in Vermont.
Carol Ferrante, Copley Hospital Chief Operating Officer, commented, “While the closure of the Birthing Center was a difficult moment for our community, we are proud that the equipment and supplies will continue to support local families through the Green Mountain Birth Center. We are committed to helping strengthen maternal care in Vermont and are thrilled to support this new chapter.”
The hospital continues to work with GMBC on remaining items of value and is pleased that these donations will benefit families and caregivers as they prepare for the opening.
