T1D affects children and adults at any age. It is an autoimmune disease that requires constant monitoring and the person must depend upon injected or pumped insulin for life. The risk of dangerously high or low blood glucose levels is high. This can be life-threatening or result in major complications. A person with T1D does not produce insulin. Their immune system attacks and destroys insulin-producing cells in their pancreas. The body needs insulin because it helps you get energy from food. T1D is a serious disease, but with proper management and treatment options, people with T1D can lead full and active lives.
