Morrisville – If you have heart disease or have experienced a heart event such as a heart attack, had stent placement, or bypass or heart valve surgery, your doctor may encourage you to participate in a Cardiac Rehabilitation (Rehab) program. Cardiac Rehab is designed to help you lower your risk for future heart problems while helping to improve your overall heart health. This is achieved through exercise, education, and group support. At Copley Hospital, Cardiac Rehab is a personalized twelve-week (3 days a week) supervised program lead by Physical Therapists Betsy Harper and Kate Simone. Harper describes Copley’s program as individualized to meet each patient’s specific needs. “Our goal is to provide participants with the tools and support they need to live heart healthy,” says Harper. “We work closely with our participants and their physicians to monitor progress and ensure goals are being met,” says Harper. Harper explains that the first step is an initial evaluation that allows her to help design a plan that is specific to the needs of the participant. Every plan includes three broad components: exercise, education and support. Harper says the exercise component includes the use of equipment as well as the use of hand weights. Copley’s program uses treadmills, rowing machines, stationary bicycles, NuSteppers and arm ergometers. Guest speakers help participants understand how to manage their heart health. Topics include: risk factors, stress management, home exercise program, nutrition, medications, cholesterol 101, warning signs, heart anatomy and more.
Benefits of attending a cardiac rehab program include:
Harper encourages anyone who has recently experienced a heart event to stop by to learn more about the program and perhaps talk to someone in the program to have a better understanding of its benefits.
