Copley Welcomes Oncology Nurse PractitionerContact: Peter Wright, 888-830108/13/2007
For Immediate Release
Copley officials are pleased to welcome Nurse Practitioner, Elizabeth (Liesl) Steiner to their Oncology team. Steiner joins a staff which includes oncology certified nurses Sandy Grace, Barb Shane and Karen Willett and will be working under the direction of Oncologist, Dr. Julie Olin. “With the increasing number of patients seen through our oncology department the need for a nurse practitioner will enable Copley to grow its oncology services and improve the coordination of comprehensive chemo cancer care,” states Copley’s Senior Director Clinical Services, Elizabeth Jordan, RN, Ph.D. “Liesl’s clinical skills will be an asset to our patients and to the entire oncology support team – an asset from which Copley and our community will benefit.”
Steiner brings to Copley more than eight years experience as a Nurse Practitioner. Her most recent position was at the Vermont Center for Cancer Medicine, a private practice in Colchester, where she was responsible for assessing and treating people receiving chemotherapy. There she collaborated with doctors, nurses and community providers to provide cohesive care for patients and their support team. Prior to becoming a Nurse Practitioner she provided skilled nursing care to a wide range of patients while working at Lamoille Home Health and Hospice in Morrisville. In the early 1990’s she worked as a nurse at Copley Hospital.
Steiner received her Master’s of Science and Bachelor of Science in Nursing at the University of Vermont. Her professional memberships include American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Care Medicine and Vermont Nurse Practitioners Association.
You ask, what is a Nurse Practitioner (NP)? A nurse practitioner is a registered nurse who has completed advanced training in clinical care. The advanced knowledge and skills allow NPs to function as clinical experts in their fields of choice. Their scope of practice includes comprehensive health assessments, diagnosing, ordering, supervising care and interpreting diagnostic tests. NPs may treat both acute and chronic conditions, as well as prescribe medications and therapies for the patient. They can serve as a patient’s health care provider and see patients from all ages depending on their designated scope of practice. Informing patients about their health and encouraging them to participate in decisions are central to the care provided by NPs.
Oncology care at Copley has grown since opening the clinic in 1995. In fact, the varieties of chemotherapies offered are equivalent to those provided at large, academic/tertiary care facilities. In addition to private treatment rooms with their own television, magazines and books, patients are given a lap blanket made by volunteers, are encouraged to bring family members or friends to sit with them and have use of a kitchenette where they will find snacks and beverages. These services are all provided in a friendly, warm and patient-centered environment where the patient’s comfort comes first. “Cancer care at Copley is individualized. From the time of diagnosis to the treatment plan and follow-up – that’s the Copley difference,” states Peter Wright, FACHE, Senior Director Planning, Development and Medical Group Operations.
“Liesl is truly an asset to Copley. We are excited about the level of competence she brings to our department and feel patients will see an increase in individualized care as well as education,” continued Dr. Jordan. The Copley family extends a warm welcome to Liesl Steiner and invites the community to do so as well.
