Patient Care - Sleep LabEvery year, millions of Americans experience fatigue, irritability, depression, lack of concentration and memory, lost productivity and vehicle or workplace accidents due to sleep disorders. Such symptoms can affect your job, your health, and your quality of life. If left untreated, some disorders may increase the risk of high blood pressure, heart attack, or stroke.
The Copley Sleep Lab evaluates and treats sleep disorders, predominantly sleep apnea, narcolepsy, and restless leg/periodic leg movement syndrome. Our sleep lab uses state of the art digital monitoring equipment to obtain the highest quality data. All studies are supervised by a trained sleep technician, scored by a registered polysomnographic technologist and interpreted by a board certified sleep physician. What are sleep disorders?
- Snoring is a common problem, but loud snoring can be a symptom of a serious disorder called sleep apnea. People with this disorder actually stop breathing repeatedly during sleep (as many as several hundred times a night) due to complete or partial blockage of the airway by tissue in the nose or throat.
- Narcolepsy is a common problem that is characterized by excessive, uncontrollable sleep episodes during the day, which interfere with activities at work or school. Other symptoms are vivid nightmares or hallucinations at the onset of sleep, temporary paralysis of arms and legs when falling asleep, or sudden muscle weakness during moments of intense emotion, such as anger or excitement.
- People with insomnia have chronic problems falling asleep or staying asleep. This may be due to a number of causes, most commonly stress or depression. However, insomnia may have other causes such as breathing difficulties or involuntary muscle movements.
- Periodic Limb Movement Disorder is the repetitive kicking, jerking, or flexing of arms or legs throughout the night due to involuntary muscle contractions.
- Other sleep problems may be the result of chronic respiratory problems or lung diseases, which can worsen during sleep, nightmares, or night terrors.
Sleep disorder testing at Copley involves an initial appointment with a sleep specialist who will determine if an overnight sleep study is necessary. If a sleep study is required, you will be scheduled to spend one night in a private patient room. During your stay, sleep stages, patterns, heart activity, blood oxygen levels and body movements will be monitored.
If a sleep disorder is diagnosed, your treatment may include medication, changes in daily habits or work schedules, or a nasal mask to relieve snoring and upper airway obstruction.
Our compassionate and professional team looks forward to working with you to evaluate and treat any potential sleep disorder you may have in addition to ensuring your night is spent comfortably here at Copley's Sleep Lab.
