| A Rheumatologist is a specialist that focuses on non-surgical treatment of rheumatic diseases, including arthritis. Rheumatologists with Fletcher Allen Health Care see patients in Copley Hospital's Outpatient Services Center.
Rheumatic diseases and conditions generally affect joints, tendons, ligaments, bones and muscles. Inflammation is common with rheumatic conditions, causing swelling, redness, heat and pain. Internal organs may also be affected. Some conditions can be debilitating or result in life-threatening complications. There are more than 100 conditions referred to as rheumatism. Typically, they are broken into categories based on location and symptoms. For example: bursitis is an example of localized rheumatism; TMJ (jaw joint pain) is considered regional rheumatism; and Fibromyalgia is an example of generalized rheumatism.
