Legacy Circle

“We make a living by what we get,
but we make a life by what we give."
                                                     -Winston Churchill

In 1932, our community was given an important gift – Copley Hospital. The gift was given by Alexander H. Copley.  Thanks to the generosity of Mr. Copley and many others since, our hospital has served hundreds of thousands of patients through the years.

Each one of us has the resources to make a significant legacy gift to Copley Hospital. How?  By making a deferred gift.

Like Mr. Copley, you can give a gift that gives for generations to come – with a bequest in your will, naming Copley as a beneficiary of your IRA or another type of planned gift.  This type of gift may also help you save taxes.

Copley’s Legacy Circle recognizes supporters who have provided for Copley Hospital in their will or other planned gift. Planned gifts, also called deferred gifts, enable you to make gifts in ways that complement your financial goals. Most importantly, planned gifts ensure Copley will continue to serve future generations.

Legacy Circle Member Sumner "Joe" House
Sumner “Joe” House asked his daughters to remember the hospital after he passed away.  Joe had made some wonderful friends while volunteering in the Copley’s Center for Outpatient Services. They kept in touch when he moved out of the area to live with family. Joe passed away on March 16, 2008.  His daughters were pleased to share stories of his days of volunteering and expressed appreciation of how much his Copley friends meant to him. Joe’s legacy gift helped Copley expand the Center for Outpatient Services in 2010, opening a new Sleep Medicine Clinic and providing for more outpatient services.

Legacy Circle Member Dr. Paul M. St. Aubin
Dr. St. Aubin enjoyed volunteering in our Radiology Department. After making provisions for his loved ones, he left a legacy gift to Copley's charitable care program.

Join the Copley Legacy Circle
The visionary donors who support Copley with legacy gifts are honored with membership in the Copley Legacy Circle.  Once you have provided for your loved ones, we hope you will consider a bequest or planned gift to provide for Copley Hospital and become a legacy donor.

You can leave a lasting legacy by naming Copley as a beneficiary in your will.  A simple sentence is all it takes.

A will is the legal expression of your wishes for the disposition of your property to take effect at death.  Beneficiaries (the heirs who receive the bequests) are the individuals and organizations especially important to you. Whether for the entire estate, or any portion of the estate, a fixed amount or a percentage of total assets, bequests are easy to make.

Here is some sample bequest language for use by potential donors and their attorneys:

General Bequest Clause - I give all my real and personal property to Copley Hospital, 528 Washington Highway, Morrisville, Vermont, for its unrestricted use.

Specific Bequest Clause - I give ______ ($_________, or a specific asset, or _____% of estate) to Copley Hospital, 528 Washington Highway, Morrisville, Vermont, for its unrestricted use.

Residuary Bequest Clause - I give all my remaining assets of any kind to Copley Hospital, 528 Washington Highway, Morrisville, Vermont, for its unrestricted use.

Other Deferred Gifts include:

Naming Copley as a Beneficiary
on Your Retirement Plan or Life Insurance Policy
You can name Copley Health Systems, Inc. as a beneficiary of a new or existing life insurance policy, individual retirement plan (IRA), Keogh Plan 401(k), 403(b) or qualified pension plan. In doing so, you can reduce your estate taxes.

Charitable Gift Annuitites
You can transfer appreciated securities to Copley Health Systems, Inc. and in return, Copley will ask a third party to draw up a contract in which Copley agrees to pay you a fixed annuity for life.

Charitable Remainder Trusts
If you have assests that are highly appreciated, earning a low rate of return, which would trigger large capital gains taxes if sold, you may want to consider transferring the assets into an independent trust that yields income interest for Copley.  When the income interest ends, the trust ends, and the assets go to Copley.
We encourage anyone wishing to donate in the form of stocks, trusts, life insurance, bequests, etc. to obtain professional counsel before making a gift.
